Mend in Public Day with the Flax to Linen Team!

In conjunction with the global Fashion Revolution Week movement, the University of New Hampshire History Department hosted a Mend in Public Day in Hamilton Smith Hall on April 26, 2025. With partners from the community, including expert sewers, spinners, and crocheters, participants learned about sustainable fashion practices. They discovered how to sew on a button, mend clothing, and observe the thread production process through spinning. The UNH Flax to Linen team also attended to demonstrate the processes of breaking, scutching, and combing. Attendees had the opportunity to break flax reeds that the UNH team had harvested in previous years using the handmade flax break built by UNH History Department alum Sophie MacDonald. Huge thanks to the UNH History Department, the Flax to Linen team, our community partners, and many more for this successful event. Included below are pictures from the event.
